Dr Carol Sargent, who campaigns for more inclusivity for those with dementia & their carers

This week’s spotlight is on three speakers who can talk about many subjects relevant to their lives, experiences and expertise however they focus heavily on a single subject each — dementia inclusion; employee trusts and food (or nutrition).

I’m delighted to introduce you all to Dr Carol Sargent, Chris Maslin and to Caroline Peyton. All are PR clients of mine and all are featured on my speaker platform.

Transforming Travel For Those With Dementia

Have you ever wondered how to make travel and tourism more accessible for those with cognitive challenges like dementia?

Meet Dr Carol Sargent, who is on a mission to transform the way we think about dementia and travel.

It’s personal for Carol. Dementia impacted the lives of both her mother and mother-in-law and therefore the lives of Carol and her close family — yet for her, it was always about focusing on what ‘can’ be achieved and not on what ‘cannot’ be achieved.

As a scientist who had led global projects, she was sure she could use her skills for a new purpose — creating services, particularly around holidays and travel, to support people with dementia and their loved ones to continue to enjoy all that a holiday can bring.

She launched MindforYou back in 2014 as a social enterprise offering specialist holidays for people living with dementia and their family carers. Her scientific background and personal caregiving experience meant she could prove the concept within just 18 months. During her time with that organisation she supported 100s of people and their carers to have holidays with the support they needed to feel safe and have a great time. For Carol, it’s not that difficult to achieve and those with dementia often want to go on holiday — and have money to spend to do so.

It was in recent years that she stepped away to establish Sargent Group Consulting to help the wider travel and tourism industry using her expertise to become more dementia- inclusive.

Today, Carol works with travel organisations, government agencies, local authorities, and charities to create more accessible travel opportunities. Her driving ambition is to fight back against negative narrative around dementia which can appear constant and show that those with dementia can live constructive and fulfilling lives. They are also open to a world of travel possibilities.

“Travel and tourism has the potential to bring hope, joy and new memories — and to rebuild self-esteem for those facing this life-changing diagnosis,” Carol told me when we spoke recently.

Her ultimate vision is a social shift where dementia is no longer seen as the end of life, but a new phase where joy and fun can still be experienced with the right care and understanding.

Carol speaks about her personal journey with dementia, debunking myths, making holidays accessible, creating dementia-friendly environments, and running a charity-turned-business focused on travel for those with cognitive challenges. Find out more about Carol here:

Chris Maslin passed his business into an employee-owned trust — and now helps others do the same

Future-Proofing With Employee Ownership

Chris Maslin is a forward-thinking entrepreneur who helps small business owners secure their company’s future by making employee ownership easy and affordable.

We can all relate to Chris’s journey. A young professional questioning the status quo, he heard ‘that’s just how we do things here’ far too many times. After five years of corporate life, he decided enough was enough. So in 2009, he took the plunge and set up his own business.

Starting from scratch, Chris built an accountancy firm that grew to £1 million turnover and then he wanted to move on. Yet he didn’t want to do that and put his team’s careers in jeopardy. He wanted a solution which honoured them and allowed him to step away.

In 2021, he transferred control of the company to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) to make sure the firm continued to be a success beyond his own involvement and the team took over. For him, this was the ethical solution to allow him to step away and pay tribute to the team who had allowed the business to grow.

Chris also has an uncanny knack for simplifying complex processes. In 2012, he co-founded MVL Online, streamlining intricate legal transactions into straightforward, template-driven processes. A decade later, it’s still going strong.

Now he’s bringing that same simplified approach to employee ownership transitions. In 2022, he launched Go EO aiming to make Employee Ownership Trust transfers accessible and affordable for small businesses. Literally taking a project which could cost up to £30k down to around £7k. Since then he’s supported many company owners to take the same path as they step away from their businesses.

Chris’s personal experience as a founder who’s been through the Employee Ownership Trust process himself sets him apart. He understands the challenges and rewards first hand, making him uniquely positioned to guide others through this transformative journey.

Chris Maslin is more than just a business consultant — he’s a visionary simplifying the path to employee ownership, one company at a time. He can talk about what he did, how he can help others, or how they can help themselves and there’s more to come from Chris — just watch this space!

Caroline Peyton is a nutritional therapist who can make you think about food in a very different way…

Energising Health Through Nutrition

Caroline Peyton is a dynamic force in the world of nutrition and workplace wellness. With over 14 years of clinical experience as a naturopath and nutritional therapist, she is passionate about helping people optimise their health through personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes tailored ot their individual circumstances.

Caroline’s journey to becoming a health expert wasn’t smooth. After a 20-year corporate career that left her drained and dealing with skin issues, she realised nutrition was her true calling. So she went back to school, diving deep into naturopathy, nutritional therapy, and gut health.

Today, she’s known as ‘The Energise to Optimise Speaker’. She brings her wealth of knowledge to individuals, groups, and workplaces with one-on-one consultations, workshops and group wellness programs.

As a speaker, she talks about digestive health and the gut microbiome. She firmly believes that ‘health starts in the gut’ — a naturopathic principle now backed by cutting-edge science. By optimising digestion and gut function, she helps clients boost their energy, clear up chronic health issues, and feel revitalised.

Caroline’s expertise goes beyond merely clinical practice. She was a founding member and chair of the Naturopathic Nutrition Association, and served as an accreditor for the General Naturopathic Council. This allows her to approach health from multiple angles — nutritional, naturopathic, and lifestyle-based.

Whether you’re looking to supercharge your workplace productivity, transition smoothly through menopause, or simply understand the fascinating world of your gut microbiome, Caroline has the knowledge and passion to guide you. Her talks and programs blend scientific insights with practical, actionable advice.
