From TV to PR — a glimpse of my journey
Way before PR came into my life, in fact from the age of 13 I was drawn to television.
Born in the 1960s, I was brought up around the fascination of that little box which brought the world to my little corner of Somerset. Our TV was black and white, and you walked across the room to the set to turn the switch (none of this remote control business). I remember the move into colour TV which felt like someone had sprinkled fairy dust into our home.
It all started at…
Aged 13, I saw a TV reporter called Andrew Harvey in my home town of Radstock, telling a story. The story was around the closure of the railway line which ran right through the town.
It was a shock to the locals and a sad time, as it had been central to the town’s life, Radstock had been at the heart of the North Somerset Coal Field. Coal came to the town and was taken away by the GWR. I even have a picture which captures that moment in time painted by local artist David Fisher.
My next decision changed everything
Back then, TV was magical and when I saw Andrew Harvey I knew instantly I wanted to do that job, I wanted to be a journalist. People talk about lightbulb moments and this was one for me.
